Green Comet 2023: A Rare Sight

A rare green comet, C/2022 E3 (ZTF), is expected to make its closest approach to Earth in July 2023. The comet was discovered in March 2022 by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at Palomar Observatory in California.

The comet is estimated to be about 1 kilometer in diameter and is composed of dust and ice. As it approaches the Sun, the ice will vaporize and the dust will be released, creating a green tail. The comet will be visible to the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere in July 2023.

The green color of the comet is caused by the presence of diatomic carbon (C2) in the coma, the cloud of gas and dust surrounding the nucleus. When C2 is exposed to sunlight, it absorbs blue light and reflects green light, giving the comet its distinctive color.

The green comet is a rare sight, and it is not expected to return to Earth for another 10,000 years. So, if you have the chance to see it in 2023, be sure to take a look!

Here are some tips for viewing the green comet:

  • Find a dark location with clear skies.
  • Look for the comet low in the western sky after sunset.
  • Use binoculars or a telescope to get a better view.
  • Be patient, as the comet may be faint at first.

Here are some of the key dates for viewing the green comet:

  • Closest approach to Earth: July 14, 2023
  • Visible to the naked eye: July 11-20, 2023
  • Peak brightness: July 16, 2023
