Nikki McCray: A Basketball Legend

Nikki McCray was a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court. She was a 5-foot-11-inch guard who played with a combination of power and finesse. She was a great scorer, rebounder, and defender. She was also a gifted passer and leader.



McCray was born in Collierville, Tennessee, in 1971. She played high school basketball at Collierville High School, where she was a two-time All-American. She then went on to play college basketball at the University of Tennessee, where she was a four-year starter and two-time SEC Player of the Year.


After college, McCray was drafted by the Washington Mystics in the first round of the 1997 WNBA draft. She played for the Mystics for eight seasons and was named to three WNBA All-Star teams. She also played for the Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Silver Stars, and Chicago Sky during her WNBA career.


In addition to her WNBA career, McCray also played for the United States national team. She was a member of the gold medal-winning teams at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. She also played in the 1998 FIBA World Championship.


After retiring from playing, McCray became a coach. She was an assistant coach at South Carolina from 2008 to 2020. She then became the head coach at Mississippi State in 2020. She led the Bulldogs to a 22-8 record in her first season and was named C-USA Coach of the Year.


McCray was a true basketball legend. She was a dominant player at every level she played. She was a winner, both on and off the court. She was a role model for young women everywhere.


McCray passed away on July 7, 2023, at the age of 51. She was survived by her husband, Thomas Penson, and their ten-year-old son, Thomas Jr.
